This one’s for the freaks
Ahhh, the infamous Underdogs.
It’s not the music I’m bothered with. I actually sorta like it. Yeah it’s basically a grown band trying to imitate their youth without actually having a grasp of the youthful arrogance and simplicity they had back then, thus sounding a bit awkward. Nonetheless, it works alright and James’ roaring soaring kinda adds some edge to it. The actual highlight is the outro though, the furious furious outro, the only genuinely good bit of the song.
The lyrics… Eh, they’re bad I can’t be arsed to get annoyed by them either. They’re clumsy as hell, you could argue for ages about the implications of classifying the essential Manics fan as a glitter fairy rebel and that “people like you need to fuck people like me” is always going to haunt the song with its utter badness, but they’re not the main fault.
That edit is. That horrible, horrible edit error during the transition from the first chorus to the second verse that I simply cannot understand how the hell it got there. It’s not a song-ruiner but it still leaves you thinking how the hell no one noticed – or in the worst case, cared – about it. It’s just… amateurish.
I don’t view Underdogs as badly as most do but it shouldn’t have been on the album. Would’ve been better as a b-side or the one-off download single it was originally released as. The problem comes forth when you realise how much impact the rather negative greeting the song got had on the band. The song, despite being a tribute to fans and obviously a track of some concentration because it was released as a free gift, was pretty much never played live. The band have brushed it away. We can be pretty sure we’ll never get freebie songs like it anymore. Originally there was a fan competition to make a video for the song – the competition was pretty much forgotten until ages afterwards when the official site quietly decided to put up the finished version (edited together from official material and a lot of fan clips). And then brushed away again.
