The happier I am when I’m with you the harder it gets when I am alone
It’s a rather great lyric, this. Very un-Manicsy in a sense as it’s one of the closest moments they’ve got a love song (or something that can be interpreted as one) but the words just radiate honest longing and feeling.
For a long time this has been one of the weakest Manics tracks for me. I’m starting to appreciate it these days. It’s still a very run-of-the-mill EMG era composition and it suffers a lot from the weak production but it’s got a wonderfully sincere mood to it.
I think sincere and honest are the perfect words to describe the song really. Just a very open and uncomplicated song.
If I had to chop EMG down a bit this song would be on the shortlist, but I’m sincerely starting to believe that there’s more fault in the album’s weak, powerless production than the actual composition. The remaster on the 10th anniversary re-release of the album backs this theory up: the song has never sounded as great as it has on that re-release.
