But your love alone won’t save the world
Some songs burn out on you. Hearing them too much reveals their flaws, a joyous fling turns into a sad realisation that it’s not so exciting after all.
When Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, or YLAINE for short, was first played on a radio, I listened to the radio rip countless times. I was absolutely in love. The chorus was amazing, the verses were fun, Nina Persson’s vocals sounded well. She’s one of the few female lead singers who do something for me (my tastes in singing are rather male-centric, I’m afraid) and it was great to have her duet with the band. Not too surprising either, considering how both Persson and Manics have admitted their love for eachother’s bands.
It’s now been over a year from that fling. YLAINE’s gone from a fantastic crush to a simply alright track with a good chorus. It is what it is – a song written with hit potential as the goal. It’s a song that grabs you in an instant, but sadly this time it’s also a song that doesn’t hold much water in further listening. It doesn’t excite anymore. Even Persson’s voice seems completely absent and uninterested in most parts. But the chorus is still good.
The short Nicky vocal cameo is the best part of the song.
Single sleeve quote: “We do not take pictures with our cameras. We make them with our hearts, we make them with our minds” as said by Arnold Newman.
The video is your standard “battle of the bands” kind of thing, each vocalist with their own band showing off to eachother before finally uniting into one stage. Rather average. And because the damn Youtube’s got all these country restrictions, enjoy a Glastonbury live version instead.
