You’re so easy to dehumanise
Generation Terrorists sprawls, crawls and drawls through 18 tracks and seventy-something minutes with sometimes rather flip-floppy quality. Particularly during the latter half of the album GT starts to disintegrate and turn into the sort of mess you expected it to become eventually. The bad thing is that some songs kinda get drowned under the mess.
So Dead’s one of those songs. It’s what you could call a standard early day Manics tune, except the lyrics aren’t as cringeworthy as in most cases. It’s standard in pretty much every way, from composition to style to quality. It doesn’t fall low nor does it hit high. It’s a good song, but it’s not so good that it would really stand out from the tunes around it. It becomes the track you pass through enjoyably on your way to end, enjoy but do not raise on a pedestal later on.
When reviewed separately you do get more out of it – a fun, even if somewhat dumb chorus and good verses although slightly marred by the not-too-exciting ending (even if James’ filtered vocals are quite cool). But in the middle of the album it just drowns under the weight of others.
