We wanna play in the burnt-out palace ruins
I’m not sure if it was meant to be like it, but I think this is one of Manics’ funniest songs. Not in a SoBadIt’sFunny way either, it’s actually genuinely quite good.
There’s just so much subtle tongue-in-cheek humour. Read from the paper, the lyrics come off as pretty serious even if a bit naïve: another anti-royalty tirade, even if the rampant sarcasm saves it. But oh man, the musical delivery. First of all, the whole song has this groovy 60’s vibe to it – it’s subtle but it’s there. Then you add a middle section with jubilant handclaps and a simple bright piano line to cause some contrast in the otherwise guitar-heavy track. And finally James’ delivery with the little wink in the eye (which really works with the sarcasm and black humour in the words) and the line-ending falsettos really turn the lyrics into more knowingly dry and witty rather than completely serious.
And thus, in an instant, your politic sneering has turned into a political groove-out party. Jubilant!
