At 21 I thought this song was over
Manic Street Preachers cover Smashing Pumpkins’ Disarm. No, seriously. This is the most blatant re-write ever. Disarm is a good song though so it’s not all bad. Fearless Punk Ballad is different enough to not really cause one to suffer from the over-familiarity, but it’s still something that strikes into one’s mind whenever the song plays. The comparisons are way too obvious and they like to jump on your face, effectively disturbing one’s enjoyment of the song.
The chorus is this one is fantastic though. Strings and churchbells are a rather cheesy comparison but they work here. The instrumental break is another great moment – that moment when the drums enter the scene is glorious.
Fearless Punk Ballad’s one of the better Send Away the Tigers era b-sides but knowing the general quality of those, it doesn’t really rank that high in the band’s b-sides. Perfectly good with enjoyable moments but nothing that stands out way too much. Aside from the Disarm comparisons, of course.
Just a shame about it being a vinyl b-side and the only CD version being a Japanese special re-release, my rip’s awful sound quality.
